vierna is certain that she once lived in the underdark with her brother, but the pounding headache she gets when she tries to recall her past keeps her from prying. though her sweet nature endeared her to those who lived at the monastery despite her heritage, she never really got over the way visitors would shy away from her in terror.
after their father's death, the twins set out to avenge the murder of the man who card for them as his blood. the more assassins sent after them, the more personal the mess became, until the pair destroyed the iron throne by cutting off the head of the snake.
they had intended to fade away, find a place where drow on the surface might be more welcome, for even as the city lauded them as heroes they felt the mistrust ebbing from the people. instead, they found themselves kidnapped by a mad mage who wanted to steal their joint soul, and he eventually did succeed, forcing the twins to hunt him into hell itself to retrieve what had been stolen from them.
after they slew the most powerful of their murderous siblings, the twins were offered the chance to ascend. but the choice was not offered to each of them, but to both. if they did not make the same decision, they would have to come to an agreement. and, having found so little peace among mortals, the pair opted for divinity. it is said they are still fierce protectors of all outcasts, and beloved by all their worshippers.
born to matron mother iraeylene of house tlin'oara, who already had too many children to care about yet another pair of disposable ones, vierna and her twin brother valas were largely ignored in the early years of their lives, leaving them to rely only on each other, something that built a fierce loyalty and deep affection between them. vierna and valas loved each other by the time they realized that any relationship other than animosity among drow siblings was practically unheard of. keeping their emotions hidden to survive, they relied only on each other in a harsh world that threatened to drain all their devotion out of them.
vierna's mother only took interest in her once she saw her prowess with the blade, and immediately put a hand into the remainder of her time in the underdark. she was sent to be schooled in the art of war, where no kindness was extended to her. brutal and cruel, they might have beat the kindness and goodness out of her if not for the steadying presence of her brother in the back of her mind. still, the time of her blooding quickly approached, and she never she would never be able to fool the priestesses then. she and her brother knew that they needed to leave as soon as possible if they wanted to avoid shedding innocent blood.
desperate to escape the underdark as soon as possible and find a life where they might be free, vierna and valas' escape plan was incomplete and sloppy, and in the resulting mess the twins were separated.
vierna knows logically that the chances are slim that valas survived, but she nonetheless refuses to fully believe that he is dead, and she continually searches for him even as she trains herself to be a better warrior, knowing that if she finds him she will never let them be separated again.
before she could find valas, though, he found her first.
he had done things she would not have expected, but he was still the same brother, she remembered, the one she loved, and couldn't hold anything against him. once the two of them were reunited, true to vierna's oath, they were never separated for long again.
