history

after the birth of his elder brother caiden, jasper's mother stopped bothering to hide her affairs, and one of those affairs resulted, eventually, in jasper. unlike his older brother, as a child jasper found it easy to fit in to his human half-siblings. though things changed as he got older and they became less close, the bonds he had created with them never truly faded, and he remained always close with his youngest sister, serafina. though he never did learn who his father was, he found that he was still content in the life he had, and that he didn't need to know.

he became a priest at the local church and quickly showed a talent and a love for it. there were rumors that he was being considered for high priest, but he never could bring himself to accept it. that would have felt like putting a lock down on his freedom, no matter how much he adored the church. and for a time, he was happy there, but the restlessless that had plagued him his entire life could only be suppressed for so long.

the routine of it all, eventually, began to bore him, as did all the handouts he was given as a noble, even as a bastard. he needed more excitement in his life, so he left home, determined to find some kind of adventure, but he never believed he'd stay away forever, and he didn't.

they fell into a passionate, utterly consuming love, but jasper was full of doubt that he only loved her because she was the only one he could touch without hurting. so, one morning he left her behind before she could wake, needing to know the truth.

he tracked and hunted a mage who was purported to create potions for anything anyone could dream of. though the price was steep, and not only in coin, jasper procured a potion that would cool his skin for three months, if the mage was truthful, and that was all the time he would have, and that to make the effects permanent would have a very high cost indeed.

so jasper spent the next three months in the arms of many, many women, something he would be ashamed of later, but something he needed to do at the time nonetheless. and when the three months were over, he knew he should never have left lazula.

he searched for her frantically, desperate to be with her again, and it took him almost a year to find her. she was not happy to see him—he had left her without a word, after all. jasper confessed everything to her, from why he left to what he had done while he was gone, and she admitted that she had had doubts as well, that he only loved her because she was his only option. and then she forgave him, and nothing beyond that mattered, only that she loved him. and he brought the wild girl back to the home he'd left behind and realized that it wasn't so small as he remembered after all.
