like so many of her kind, leora was fascinated by humans, wanting to become one. though true humanity was something she could not have, one day she shed her natural form to try on that of a human, wandering into a nearby town, where she found herself falling in love. they were married in the spring, and leora thought that no one had ever been so happy.
the life of a human is not so long as that of a pahari, though, and leora found herself burying her husband scarcely before she even noticed the years passing. her children had long since set off to find their own lives, so without so much as a goodbye to the friends she had come to care for, she slipped away, back to the sea.
sometimes, she'd find herself wondering if she regretted her choices, but she never did, no matter how many times she thought about it. though her heart had been broken, she also lived more in her sixty-odd years on land than she had in her entire existence before and since. she held on to the memory, refusing to let the pain of her heartbreak poison the love she had felt and the life she had lived.
after losing her husband, leora didn't expect to find love again. she didn't even look for it. but somehow, it still found her, in a way she could never have expected. but then again, things rarely happen the way anyone expects them to. after an unexpected and intimate encounter with a nomadic barbarian, she chose to accompany him on the road. he didn't love her, though, and it wasn't long before she became deeply unhappy. still, she was determined to stick with the life she had chosen, and then, the worst thing happened: she fell in love with him, but still, she knew that he didn't love her.
during this time, she was courted by a mischievous, flighty elf, and though at first she thought that he must be teasing her, she developed feelings for him, regardless. he, and his young daughter, were the only people who seemed to really see her and care about her, and that was something that she desperately craved. leora became more and more unhappy with the man she'd chosen, and the only moments she felt any happiness at all were when she was with ylynvar. though her heart still belonged to another, she cared about him deeply.
ylynvar asker her to run away with him a couple of times, but she doubted his sincerity, and besides, she had chosen the man she would stand by already. however, her unhappiness continued to grow, and finally, she found herself saying yes to him, and she hoped that when they did, he would not leave her. leora knew that she could love him if she had the chance, and she wanted to believe that he loved her. whatever the case was, he didn't leave her, and she thought that with him, she could find happiness.
and yet, things were not smooth sailing from here, for leora soon discovered that she was with child, and it was not ylynvar's. she was terrified of having to tell him, afraid that when she did, he would leave her.
