kaf knows nothing of his birth parents, though given his appearance, his birth must have been an extraordinary one. not quite a bladeling and also clearly born of the sea, he rarely thinks of the parents who abandoned him. the only proof he has of their existence at all are the eyes he is told all bladelings share, and a ring that belonged to his mother. despite himself, he can't discard it, and though he may not think of them often he can't quite forget that there are two people somewhere in the world who brought him into it.
raised by a human couple who loved and cherished him despite his heritage, and whom he considered his true parents, the early years of his life were more pleasant than one might expect. though he resented other children for their soft skin and lack of inconvenient blades, the love his parents held for him and even his for them kept him falling into darkness. love tempered the turmoil in his soul and he was able to live a life that wasn't particularly special, but at least wasn't miserable, and at least on most days, his heart was calm.
but after his parents' deaths, kaf was plunged into a world where he was not understood by anyone, and where he didn't belong. he had never thought of himself as particularly cruel, but being alone brought out a new side of him, one untamed by love and fueled by the loneliness he would never admit. the world suddenly seemed so much colder, despite it never having seemed warm, and he found himself at a loss for his place in the world, and how to spend his life. a childhood of simplicity and safety gave way to reckless abandon that wanted, needed, to find some reason to live for.
