history, baldur's gate

valas remembers mile-high caverns and glowing deep mushrooms, though he cannot truly be certain that they are memories and not dreams. though he was frustrated by the lock on his memories, his sister kept him grounded and sane. though he could be sullen and even antagonistic towards others, his true nature showed when he spent time with his sister, and some say he occasionally even smiled.

despite his rough nature, valas loved his father, and along with his sister he sought his murderer. as the hunt became more personal, valas's anger increased, and some say he would have lost himself completely if he didn't have his sister with him. regardless, though, valas took pleasure in dismantling the organization responsible for the death of his father.

the twins fully intended to leave the city and find somewhere where they didn't face such prejudice, but their kidnapping and thievery of their joint soul prevented this escape. after they retrieved their soul, they found that their battle was not over and side by side they killed the most powerful of their siblings, bringing the war to an end before it even began.

though valas was unsure that he was suited to become a god, his sister convinced him that together the two of them would balance each other out and be an unstoppable force for good among the gods. the twins had found little peace in their time among mortals, but it is said that they are beloved by their worshippers, and that they found what they most desired in divinity.

history, forgotten realms

valas and his twin sister vierna were born to iraeylene, matron mother of house tlin'oara, who took little interest in their early existence. by the time valas and his sister realized how strange it was for them to love and trust each other, they had already formed an unbreakable bond. keeping to themselves and responsible only for themselves and each other, the two of them lived, for drow, an almost idyllic childhood, forming strong bonds of devotion and trust.

in later years, the twins would be recognized as strong individuals, though, and it was then that their mother would at last take an interest in them. vierna was whisked away to become a warrior, and valas was taught the art of subterfuge and assassination. their relatively peaceful lives shattered, and as the twins' bloodings approached, the two of them knew they needed to leave the place they were born or die trying.

in their desperation to escape the underdark, their unfinished plan went awry and the twins were separated. unable to believe that his sister could have survived, strong though she was, valas blamed himself for her death and something inside him broke.

he survived on the surface by offering his services as a hired killer, available to any job for the right price. though he knew in his heart that his sister would never have approved, her loss left him unable to care what she would have wanted. if he ever found a way to see her again, even for a few moments, he would sacrifice anything, but that was something he was unable to imagine.

and then his sister found him again. or rather, he found her.

valas was unable to believe that she had survived—but when he saw her right in front of him, he could not ignore the truth. he regretted that he had let himself fall to twisted darkness so easily, but she forgave him, and reunited, nothing could stand against the two of them.
