vardon's first (but not last) half-sibling was born less than half a decade after his birth, but he looked so much like his father that there was no doubt as to whose child he was, causing him to be doted on by his father as his only "true" child and sole heir. he was handed everything, but in return he was expected to be the perfect child, and for years, this wasn't a problem. but, eventually, he grew bored, or maybe he simply wanted a different kind of life for himself. whatever the reason, while he was a model heir during the day, at night he'd slip out of the manor and get up to all sorts of trouble.
for a time he fell in love with a village girl, but she blindsided him by marrying someone else, telling him that although she loved him they would never be able to be together in a lasting way. her betrayal cut him deeply, and he decided that he needed to leave this life behind, throwing himself into his responsibilities as a nobleman. and he became the perfect nobleman, even more than he'd been before. he was even almost engaged for a time, but in the end, his father let the arrangement fall through, deciding that the girl wasn't good enough for his son, and vardon didn't mind. whatever his father wanted, since his life was doomed to be boring anyway. and then he met her.
after losing the girl he loved, vardon closed himself off emotionally, refusing to allow himself to be hurt in that way again. you cannot lose what you do not have, so he chose not to have anything. and then he met a beautiful girl who crashed through his walls and made herself at home in his heart, despite all his reservations. he couldn't resist her pull, and he fell deeply in love with her. he worried that his father might do something drastic to get rid of her, but she charmed him into thinking that she was exactly what he wanted her to be while in secret, she showed her true self to vardon and there, they carried on their real relationship.
though many, many years passed before they were able to show the truth of their relationship to the world, and vardon refused to wed her until it could be on their own terms, completely as themselves, they still continued to love each other, their love not lessened by having to keep it a secret. when they were finally married in a beautiful, rose-filled ceremony, vardon felt that he had finally found his true place in the world.
their marriage started with blissful happiness that continued as they had their first child, adored beyond all reason and given the type of loving upbringing that vardon himself had never had. he wasn't their last child, and their family grew several times over the years. the couple's love continued to grow with their love for their family, and together they found complete happiness, and vardon finally found the contentment he's spent his whole life unknowingly searching for.
